2026 Report — Renewable Energy & CO2 Footprint
Global warming and the Low Countries
The world is changing and natural resources are becoming scarcer. The Netherlands is gradually choosing new sources of energy, cleaner air and healthier soils. This matters for the protection of nature, so that our children may still know the same polders, dunes and forests.
The average temperature on Earth is rising and this is noticeable in our region. Dry summers, heavier rainfall and higher sea levels call for a calm and considered development of policy. Researchers at Dutch universities track water levels, land use and air quality closely. Their reports show that a gradual transition to clean sources of energy helps to bring emissions down. The protection of nature is not only an ecological task but also a social responsibility: clean air, clean water and quiet neighbourhoods all contribute to a pleasant life.
The role of the Netherlands in the green transition
The Netherlands is among the European countries actively working on its own plan for the 2030 climate targets. Dutch energy companies, research institutes and provinces cooperate on large solar parks, offshore wind farms and smart electricity grids. Cities invest in heat pumps, insulation and green roofs. The National Plan for Renewable Energy aims at a balanced development: technology and landscape must go together. Residents are involved early in the design, so that a wind park or solar field fits the surroundings. This approach is calm, slow and social.

The future of agriculture
Dutch agriculture has a long tradition of craftsmanship. In the coming years it is joined by what is known as agriculture 5.0: sensors in the soil, weather stations in the field and open data about crops. Farmers can therefore use water and nutrients more precisely, which is good for the soil and the surface water. At the same time attention grows for circular agriculture, biodiversity and smaller greenhouses with low energy use. The aim is a future where food is produced nearby, with respect for animals, plants and soil.
"Clean energy, a strong Netherlands."
The green transition is not a contest but a patient process. By working together on the protection of our surroundings, we build a future that matches the values of the Netherlands.
